Chess Club

Playing chess at Myrtle Beach Christian Academy Name: Knights for Christ Chess Club

Meeting time and location: Wednesdays, 3:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m., in Room 1 of the Middle School at Christian Academy.

Cost: Dues of $1.00 per week will be collected for National Chess Federation member fee, the chess coach's membership fee, buying equipment and supplying after school snacks. Records of the dues will be kept. Any cash on hand will be put in the school safe. This is a non-profit organization. A small stipend will be given to the coach annually.

Purpose: To provide a fun, yet non-physical game time for any students able to participate. Chess is a game of strategy and it will be used to develop higher level thinking skills. It is sometimes considered a "war" game, however we will make the application to Christian warfare and the strategies a Christian must use in fighting each battle of life. Christ-like behavior will be both modeled and expected. Personal progress, not winning will be highlighted.

Ranks of Achievement:
Pawns - when you enter (you start with 900 pts.)
Knights- after you have learned some strategies and achieved 1000 pts.
Bishop, Rook, and Royalty - as you progress. Ranks will be based on determination, dedication to learning the game, and a club rating system.

Point System: Players of the same rank earn 15 points for a win, lose 15 points for a loss, if a higher ranked player beats one of lower rank they gain 10 points, if they should lose they lose 15 points, if a lower ranked player should beat one of a higher rank they would gain 15, but only lose 10 for a loss, ranks above a Pawn may not earn points playing a Pawn unless the coach agrees previous to the game being played. Nominations will be submitted no less than 2 days before the election so that discussion and permission from the nominee may be had. Officers not regularly attending will be replaced by a special election. At least 2/3 of the membership must be in agreement to select an officer. Officers must be in the 4th grade or above.

The proposed officers are:

  • Knight- set up, chooses helpers, help the chess coach to plan club times, plan tournament events, show Knightly qualities while playing the game.
  • Squire- help keep attendance and dues records, check out instructional tapes.
  • Page- help serve snacks, and help clean-up (ask several players to help)

Play time: At least one game at every meeting, matches with other school groups, and tournament play for those of a Knight or higher. Computer sites and outside playtime will be encouraged.
